The purpose of an official portrait is to record history, but at the same time to convey the personality of the subject and their era. One of my official portraits was completed in spring 2026 and was commissioned for Helsingin Uusi yhteiskoulu.
The aim of the work was to create a dignified and representative portrait that also conveys the model's personality authentically and recognizably. I wanted to portray the principal as a person encountered in everyday life – warm, approachable, and true to themselves. The intention was not to create a traditional, stiff "stuffy portrait," but a work where officialdom and humanity are in balance.
The background also has significant meaning. Behind the model are the school's modern and bright facilities, which were completed during the model's career. The new wing provides an inspiring environment for both students and staff, and it was there that we conducted the first posing sessions.
I discussed with the school principal whether the portrait could have a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere – a spirit of new beginnings and renewal. The idea was positively received, and it is also reflected in the finished work. The model is wearing a light-colored wool sweater, which deviates from the traditional attire for an official portrait. Lightly flowing hair brings airiness and movement to the image, and a warm smile creates a lively, positive atmosphere in the work.
It is interesting to view the work in relation to the school's earlier portrait tradition. A portrait of Lucina Hagman is also displayed in the same school environment. Hagman was one of Finland's first female Members of Parliament and a significant figure in the women's rights movement. Her life's work and the development of women's status are topics that are personally important to me as an artist.
The finished work was placed in the school's beautifully renovated lecture hall alongside other official portraits as part of the school's history and continuum.
Warm thanks to the school and the principal for their trust and fruitful cooperation.
